Jaleco was an archives clerk for the Department of Paranormal Investigations, a sickly looking, bookworm who filed artifacts. It wasn't until he discovered the Shroud of Turin did his life change forever.
The Shroud, believed to be the burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth, was among some artifacts recovered from a recent raid on a Satanic cult; hidden in a false bottom of a wooden box. Upon touching the cloth, Jaleco was shocked to find it begin forming around his body. He had fainted from the experience but when he awoke, he found the shroud had transformed itself into a black, long coat around his body with an ever changing face in yellow upon the front, emitting a soft glow.
The Shroud was actually an alien life form, a living entity that bonded to hosts through the centuries. The Shroud granted the wearer supernatural abilities, but in turn fed off the adrenaline produced by the host.
Jaleco quickly became a different man, both physically and mentally. Gone was the quiet, weak avian. He was stronger,
faster, confident -- as though the suit not only bestowed physical gifts but also granted him confidence. However, Jaleco has no idea that the coat he wears is actually a living, thinking being. Instead, he believes it to be just some sort of ancient, magical relic. The coat acts on its own accord sometimes, making faces and gestures with its tendrils, Jaleco does not even notice this -- the creature seems to have somewhat mental control over the cardinal in this aspect.
The strangest ability the Shroud has given Jaleco is the ability of shadow travel. By willing it to do so, Jaleco can step into a shadow and appear in another anywhere in the world he has previously visited (as long as a shadow exists that he can physically step through). Travel in instantaneous. The Shroud can also envelope others (by the mouth on the front) and teleport them as well, with or without Jeleco joining them to the destination.
The suit can also create tendrils that can capture and hold opponents or objects, and it grants Jaleco the ability to climb surfaces. Where his wings are concerned, the Shroud will open up and let his wings free when desired.
The coat is near invulnerable to physical attacks (gunshots, knives, hand-to-hand), fire, acid, and cold. The Shroud typically protects Jaleco by expanding its mass to cover areas being attacked. When receiving physical damage, the Shroud looks as though the attacks are splashing crude oil. However, loud noises and creatures with sonic abilities cause the Shroud of lose control and incapacitate Jaleco.
Strength and dexterity have been tripled, as well as his senses.
Since the Shroud feeds off adrenaline, Jaleco often finds himself worn out quickly and spends much of his time eating great quantities of food and sleeping.
